Does Music Help Anxiety?
For many people, yes, in the moment. Calm, slow music paired with slower breathing can take the edge off. It is not a treatment for an anxiety disorder.
What listening can do
Give your attention somewhere to rest. Anxiety pulls attention toward threats. A steady, predictable sound is an easy, neutral place to put it instead.
Pace your breathing. Breathing out for longer than you breathe in is a common way to help the body settle. Music with a slow swell makes that easier to keep up.
Cover the noise. Soft sound masks the small noises that keep a tense mind on alert, especially at night.
Become a cue. The same session, played at the same time each day, becomes a signal to your body that it is time to wind down.
What it cannot do
Music cannot replace care for anxiety that is frequent, intense or getting in the way of your life. If that sounds like you, talk to a doctor or therapist.
If you are in crisis in the US, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time.
How to get the most from it
Keep the volume low. Choose music without lyrics or sudden changes. Listen for at least ten minutes. Use the same session regularly so it becomes familiar.
Try a session now
Steady Ground
A slow, warm drone tuned to 396 Hz with soft bells. For when your mind is racing.
Slow Breath
Bright, airy and unhurried, tuned to 432 Hz. Breathe with it: in for 4, out for 6.
Night Drift
Deep and dark, tuned to 174 Hz, with a longer breath out. Longer sessions fade out as you fall asleep.
