What is 174 Hz?
174 Hz is the lowest tone in the extended solfeggio list. The modern list started with six tones, from 396 to 852 Hz; 174 Hz, 285 Hz and 963 Hz were added later to make nine. It is not usually paired with a chakra. In the classic descriptions it is the tone for the body: grounding, ease and a sense of safety. In the Essence app it is called Inner Sanctuary, a name for the quiet, protected space it is meant to help you find.
Why people use 174 Hz to feel safe and grounded
When anxiety lives in the body, as a tight chest, a clenched jaw or restless legs, a very low, slow tone gives the body something to match. 174 Hz is deep without being a rumble, so it reads as calm rather than as noise. That makes it a favourite for evening wind-downs, body scans and the first minutes of meditation.
You will see 174 Hz described online as a natural painkiller. There is no good evidence for that, and it is not a substitute for pain treatment. What you can reasonably expect is what any slow, steady sound offers: a calmer focus and an easier time slowing your breath.
A 5-minute body scan with 174 Hz
- Lie down or sit back and press play at a low volume.
- Start at your feet. Notice how they feel without trying to change anything.
- Move slowly upward: legs, hips, belly, chest, shoulders, jaw. Spend about three breaths on each.
- Soften what you find. Wherever there is tension, breathe out a little longer and let that spot loosen.
- Notice your whole body at once for the last minute, then open your eyes when the session ends.
174 Hz for sleep and slow evenings
Because it is so low, 174 Hz is the base of the Night Drift session on this site. If you are awake with a racing mind, try sleep music for anxiety, which tunes calming music around 174 Hz and slows the breath to in for 4, out for 8. Many people pair it with 285 Hz Cellular Reset for deeper rest.
174 Hz questions
What is 174 Hz used for?
Grounding, feeling safe in your body and slowing down before rest. In Essence it is called Inner Sanctuary.
Does 174 Hz relieve pain?
That claim is common online, but there is no good evidence for it. If you are in pain, see a doctor, and use the tone for relaxation alongside proper care.
Is 174 Hz good for sleep?
Many people find very low tones easier to fall asleep to than higher ones. Keep the volume low, or try the sleep session, which fades out on its own when unlocked.
Why does 174 Hz sound so quiet?
Small phone and laptop speakers struggle with low tones. Headphones or a bigger speaker bring out the depth; keep the volume gentle either way.
